ARTSiE teamed up with the Foster Seniors at The Fleetwood- Jourdain Community Center to create hand molds for Fleetwood's first community mural. To introduce the work we're doing with the children at Fleetwood and Oakton Elementary School, Ms. Laura read the book ARTivist by Nikkolas Smith. Thanks to Fleetwood's generosity, many seniors took home a copy for their grandchildren.
While our mural artists, “Piloto” and Andrew Walker, crafted clay molds with the seniors, Ms. Laura encouraged them to share their experiences growing up in Evanston, their dreams for the children in the community, and their hopes for the mural.
Many seniors fondly recalled Evanston's small-town feel, where everyone knew each other. When offering advice to children, they emphasized respecting elders, valuing education, keeping a song in your heart, and treating everyone with respect.
Fleetwood Jourdain holds a special place in their hearts, described as a vital hub for friendship, acceptance, and community. For the mural's message, the seniors hoped it would inspire feelings of hope, togetherness, and a strong sense of community. They eagerly await the mural's completion, believing it will fill them with pride.
Through ARTSiE’s multifaceted programs, children gain a sense of belonging, satisfaction, and confidence from their collective and individual achievements while bringing families and all generations together. Want to help support this mission?
