Our History
In 2013, Laura Mudd, Arts Education Director of Faubourg Theatre, realized the literacy rates ranked very low in the Hanover Park Schools. Thus, a pro-bono after-school, literacy based ballet class was proposed to the principal and social worker in Hanover Park as a way to engage the most disengaged students.
It was clear that support was needed from the community. That’s when Mayor Rodney Craig of Hanover Park, with contacts in the school district, gave the idea the boost it needed to get off of the ground.
The program’s purpose then and now:
Improve reading comprehension through project-based learning.
Increase parent and family engagement.
Heighten social-emotional awareness and connection.
Shift teacher instructional practices
Where We Are Now
Our pilot Literacy through the Arts program has evolved into a year-round, high quality after-school program servicing multiple schools and offering multiple classes each week, as well as a six-week summer enrichment program. We are proud of how far we’ve come since the program was piloted 7+ years ago and have since branched off from Faubourg Theatre to create a focused nonprofit for our Literacy through the Arts programs so that we may brings arts in education to more children in need.
