ARTSiE Presents at IRC 2023

On Friday morning, March 10th, ARTSiE attended and presented at the Illinois Reading Council Conference in Springfield. Ms. Laura, Ms. Corinne, Ms. Eleni, and Ms. Brianna brought “Students Bloom through Literacy Arts Infusion: Engaging and Empowering Collaboration of Teachers, Families, and Communities” to over eighteen K-8th grade educators.

The presentation highlighted the successes of ARTSiE's Literacy through the Arts Enrichment Summer 2022. The focus included infusing poetry with the anchor text, Fresh Picked Poetry by Michelle Schaub and family field trips to local farmers' markets. ARTSiE also included resources on how to launch your own Literacy through the Arts program, shared reading instructional routine and research on how the arts benefit children academically, socially, and emotionally. It was a huge success

“Not only did we offer the teachers strategies and vision, but each of our team members contributed unique qualities. Together we collaborated to present a fresher and stronger version of LTA: Poetry, Farmers' Markets, and Community.” Ms. Laura

Here are some comments from educators who participated:

What a refreshing way to teach through the arts and movement. I really liked the two voice poem and how we all co-created it. Fun!

I didn't expect to be moving and dancing at the beginning. It felt uncomfortable at first, but I really liked how it got everyone together and got us moving. It was fun.

A key component of ARTSiE is shifting teacher instructional practices to improve reading comprehension, heighten social-emotional awareness and connection, and increase parent & family engagement amongst the children they teach.
