Hamburg Ballet presents a new full-length ballet production of Tennessee Williams’s The Glass Menagerie. The great playwright’s story of the Wingfield family and their hopes, dreams, and insatiable desires is set to music by American composers Charles Ives, Philip Glass, and Ned Rorem, and brought to life by the dancers of Hamburg Ballet.
With The Glass Menagerie, Williams laid the foundation for his success and fame as one of the most important authors of the 20th century. The work had its premiere in Chicago in 1944 and after a shaky start, it was the enthusiastic response of Chicago theater critics Claudia Cassidy and Ashton Stevens that led to stronger audiences and ultimately, the move to Broadway where it won the 1945 New York Drama Critics' Circle award. Although the success of this production was unexpected for the 33-year-old author, he had worked towards the premiere with great determination and an aim to show a new form of theater with his drama. He wanted to make human nature tangible by telling the scenes as "memory play" from the perspective of personal memories.
We think this would be a wonderful opportunity for our ARTSiE families! See below how we combine ballet and literacy.
